There's only one day to go until the Wychavon Festival of Brass and we wanted to take the opportunity to shine a spotlight on David Pilkington-Crowe, who has a very important part to play in our entry at this year's contest!
David was one of the original members of Lydney Training Band, where he started on Baritone and later moved onto Euphonium. After achieving Grade Eight on the latter, he sought a new challenge and moved onto percussion. He went on to study Music at Cardiff University, specialising in composition, and today works as a music teacher. His banding career has involved playing with, and conducting, a number of bands across the Gloucestershire. In 2023, he rejoined Lydney and now leads our percussion section, which has twice won the Haydn Evans Memorial Trophy for Best Percussion Section at the GBBA Own Choice Contest. For David, banding is truly a family affair too! His husband, Tom, is part of our percussion team; his parents, Neil and Sarah are stalwarts of Lydney Town Band; and his brothers, Matt and Dan are Training Band alumni (Matt, himself played a key draconic role in our set at Wychavon last year!). David is also a composer! Over the last year, you might have heard the band perform a number of David's original compositions and arrangements, including Vampire by Olivia Rodrigo, Gospel, and the recently debuted and supremely entertaining, Nightfall! Shout out to Beth for helping us get this fantastically sinister pirate flag for our set at this weekend’s Wychavon Festival of Brass
If you missed our Brass and Concert Organ last month, you will have missed the opportunity to hear the premiere of David Pilkington-Crowe’s incredible new piece: Nightfall.
Luckily, Dave from Strike Up The Brass was present and recorded the performance, and this evening, Nightfall will have its broadcast premiere on Dean Radio from 6pm! We’d like to wish our Chairman, Kevin, a very happy birthday!!!
Kevin is an absolute powerhouse, leading the organisation as a whole since the 1990s and conducting Lydney Training Band for the last 20 years. We hope you’ve had a great day! This evening, we’ll be celebrating 20 years of Lydney Training Band at our Celebration Concert in Lydney Town Hall.
The evening will feature a fabulous selection of musical entertainment including a variety of solo performances from our Training Band alumni and the world premiere of Homeward Voyage, our Musical Director Thomas Dunne’s latest musical suite! Doors open at 5pm for a 5:30pm start, tickets details available below, there’ll be refreshments and a raffle available. We can’t wait to see you there! There’s just three days to go until our 2025 Celebration Concert, where we’ll marking the twentieth anniversary of Lydney Training Band.
Today, for Throwback Thursday, we’ve decided to head all the way back to March 2005, when nascent Training Band joined the Town Band in Torquay for the Regional Championships! There’s a few faces you might recognise from the senior and junior line-ups who are still playing with Lydney. Others have moved on or retired, and some are sadly no longer with us but are fondly remembered. It’d be amazing to see you there on Sunday at Lydney Town Hall. Doors open at 5pm for a 5:30pm start! Join us for a fabulous evening of music! In one week’s time, at this very moment, we will be opening this year’s Celebration Concert at Lydney Town Hall!
It promises to be an incredible evening of musical entertainment, where we will be celebrating twenty years of Lydney Training Band! You’ll get the first glimpse of our set for the upcoming Wychavon Festival of Brass where we’ll be hoping to defend our Third Section first place title, you’ll hear from the Training Band themselves, there will be a suite of solo performances from Training Band alumni within the Town Band, before an amazing massed band finale! Doors open at 5pm for a 5:30pm start. It would be amazing to see you there! There’s only ten days to go until our Celebration Concert at Lydney Town Hall - Sunday 19th October from 5:30pm. So today, for Throwback Thursday, we’re heading back ten years to April 2015 when Lydney Training Band performed in Woolaston with the Chepstow Male Voice Choir!
Many thanks to the Forest Showcase Food Festival for inviting Lydney Training Band along to take part in today’s event!
If you want to hear more of the Training Band, we’ve got our Celebration Concert coming up in just two weeks (Sunday 19th October, 5:30pm) at Lydney Town Hall! This Sunday, Lydney Training Band will be performing at the Forest Showcase Food Festival. Why not come and listen to us between 10am - 11am before having explore around the host of stalls and exhibits on offer!
Today we’re headed back to February 2020 when Lydney Training Band took part in an incredible event under the wings of Concorde at Aerospace Bristol.
On Sunday 19th October, we’ll be marking the 20th anniversary since the Training Band was established, and some of the amazing events they’ve been involved in over the years, at our Celebration Concert in Lydney Town Hall! Join us from 5:30pm for a fabulous evening of entertainment. Earlier this year, we received a Community Grant from Lydney Town Council. This funding has allowed us to purchase a range of promotional display items for use by both Lydney Town and Training Bands to help promote the band and the town that we're so proud to represent.
If you've come along to any of our concerts this summer, you might have already spotted them but we'd like to take the opportunity to show off our new additions and to express our thanks the Town Council for their support!
