Lydney Town Band Brass & Percussion Workshop
Lydney Training Band, based in the Forest of Dean, was proud to have hosted a Brass and Percussion Workshop for local bands in Gloucestershire on Sunday 30th October 2016. The 45 attending players are members of 9 bands including: Lydney, Cinderford, Bream, Lydbrook, Forest of Dean Brass, Cheltenham, Frampton on Severn, Chalford, and Chepstow. Everyone had a full and fun day with four experienced tutors.
The Course Director chosen for the event was Philip Harper, Musical Director of the world's undisputed number one brass band - Cory Band. They are current champions of the four main international titles: the British Open, National, European, and Brass in Concert Championship.
Philip covered many skills including the basics of warming up, counting, and how to create a good warm sound by breathing correctly. His enthusiasm was contagious as he encouraged young and older learners to expand their skills and step into the styles of the challenging music chosen for the day's event.
Tutors for the day were Chris Howley (Cornet), Thomas Dunne (Euphonium), and Steve Barnett (Percussion). All experts on their respective instruments. They tutored sectional rehearsals, helping the players get to grips with the music. This was followed by another full band rehearsal, taken by Philip, to piece it all together. With regular breaks for tea, cake and socialising, the day flew by and a Finale Concert was performed to a full hall of parents and supporters. The musical programme was: Blaze Away, Shepherds Song, Indian Summer, Singing in the Rain, Jamie's Patrol and Baggy Trousers.
This is the third such event organised by Kerry Ford, Lydney Bands Youth Development Officer. The event was another resounding success! Many attendees have already asked when the next event will be. This shows that many bands in the area are encouraging both young and older players to take up a brass instrument. It is a great step towards ensuring the continuation of the brass band movement.
